BOOKBEDONNERD SEPTEMBER 2013

Since our last newsletter, there has been a flurry of activity. Writers are like the Italian ladies in the Alfa adverts - they can drive you crazy with their temperamental behavior, but you can never stop loving them. As per normal therefore, we have had to make a few adjustments to the lineup.

One of the additions to our programme is Barbara Lindop, a renowned authority, who will be speaking on artist, Gerard Sekoto

Well known Afrikaans journalist and author Elsabe Brits has fulfilled one of my dreams ever since the inception of Booktown Richmond - a talk on Emily Hobhouse. This our dear friends is a talk you do not want to miss.  In fact, I suspect our designer Woodbender chairs are going to form lasting bonds with a few bums this year.

Antony Osler had been waiting in line to experience the thrill of BoekBedonnerd ever since his visit to the J.M.Coetzee Festival two years ago. For those of you who don't know, Antony is the author of the highly acclaimed
Stoep Zen. It is very seldom that a writer can claim his sequel is better than the original but if the reviews of Antony's Zen Dust are anything to go by, this is going to become a South African classic.

Boris Gorelik phoned me on the day I got wind of the worst possible news - UKZN wants to close down its Afrikaans Department! In fact, these are my last months at a university I have called home for the last 20 years. Since school, I have known no other world than this university. But I digress! Boris will be coming to Richmond to talk on his biography of acclaimed artist Vladimir Tretchikoff.  This is a highly readable book that has been extremely well received by the book critics.

Craig Mackenzie, a well known figure in English academia, will be coming to Richmond to make sure we never forget the man who got Booktown Richmond going; Patrick Mynhardt, but more especially, the author who has ensured that Patrick will always live in our hearts - Herman Charles Bosman. Craig is an authority of Herman Charles Bosman, and his talks will remain with you long after you have bid your farewells to the Karoo.

In fact, some might say that we are Bosman-bedonnerd this year, because Francois Griebenow will also be coming to Richmond with his Afrikaans translation of Bosman. Francois is a man on a mission, intent on bringing the joy of Bosman to a wider Afrikaans readership.

Our last addition to the programme is a man you are never going to forget.  After you have heard Grant Leversha speak on
Within an African Eden, a book about the great golf courses in SA, you will walk away with absolute certainty that this is the greatest book you have ever seen.  I can tell you now that for as long as I live, I know I will never see a book like this again. Aesthetically, it has no equal. It has won countless accolades as per the list following. This is what Booktown Richmond is all about - we are, like Grant, BookBedonnerd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As usual we have a wonderful "Off Broadway On the Fringe" programme of events as well. The William Humphries Art Gallery from Kimberley will be holding art classes for the children based upon creating illustrations after a story telling session.  They will also be exhibiting a display of original South African graphic art works at the MAP gallery which is just opposite the Town Hall.

Once again Richmond Filums will be putting on childrens' shows on the Thursday and Friday afternoons as well as adult (….no not that kind of adult filums) filums on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings all at the Town Hall auditorium.

MAP has a fantastic line-up and it is well worth the short little walk to take in the exhibits on display. Harrie Siertsema and Abrie Fourie have really done the village proud with a wonderful world class setup.

Download the attached PDF file for the entire rundown.

Dana Snyman, entertainer par excellence will be performing at the Museum Hall so make a point to getting over for the show.

We are thrilled that we shall have some really great entertainment on offer at the old Library…BTR HQ…Luna Paige will be performing on the Thursday and Saturday evenings. She is a real star and you can get a glimpse of her in action on YouTube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhpPpzoiOTY  and on her web site www.lunapaige.com http://www.lunapaige.com  Tickets will be on sale from Peter or Darryl and at the door…R100 a pop.

As usual the village churches will be providing catering for teas and snackeroos in the quadrangle beside Booktown Richmond HQ. Karoo lamb is just about the best product and is a must for any braai….it's the real deal!

Local Architect Dave Clemens will also be conducting his village walkabouts which are always a big hit….Dave knows is onions with regards to Karoo buildings and so don't miss the stroll about town on the Saturday mid-day leaving from in front of the Supper Klub.

Local historians and Boer War authorities John Donaldson and Chris Sheldon will be taking interested parties on the short walk up to Vegkop for evening sundowners, leaving from the Supper Klub at about 5 in the afternoon. Place your orders for drinks beforehand.
